On Tuesday 19th November ANPI UK met with Stephen Gethins MP, representing the constituency of Arbroath and Broughty Ferry, to introduce our organisation to him and discuss about the Early Day Motion he presented in October.
The EDM honours the memory of former partisan Carlo Carini (the one in the middle, in the picture above) at the House of Commons. Carini was born in Arbroath, Angus, to Italian immigrants. He distinguished as a player in the local football team, Arbroath FC, which was in the Scottish Division Two. He moved to Piacenza with his mother in 1938 where he kept playing with A.S.D. Folgore and with Piacenza Calcio, until he joined the Resistance as a partisan in January 1944. He fought in the 141st Garibaldi Brigade from the Val D’Arda division before being arrested and kipped by Gestapo on 1st November 1944, near Piacenza.
ANPI recently met with Gethins, welcoming his gratitude to Carini and the likes of those who sacrificed themselves for the Liberation of Italy from fascism.
